The BCCI official release said that Iyer had a blunt hit to his abdomen that caused a cut in his spleen and bleeding inside. "Shreyas Iyer got a blunt hit to his belly, leading to a spleen cut with inside bleeding on 25th October in the third ODI against Australia," the note said. "The hit was spotted fast, and bleeding stopped at once. He is stable now and under watch.

"Now, we are not doctors. From outside, when the catch was taken by Shreyas, it seemed normal," he said in Canberra. "But none of us were close, only those there know what went on. They said inside it needed real care. Then he went to the expert, and we learned what took place.
"After, we spoke to him, he talked normal, we felt it is better now, as doctors and physios said it was a bad rare event. But rare events hit rare players." It is known that BCCI's medical head, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, told the board he praised the field medical team for quick and good work, which stopped a bad case.
